Making comments to cancer patients

Dealing with this has been an adventure. Sometimes the comments come from a real concern for me or my husband. Sometimes they are just stupid, off the cuff remarks. What has been your experience with this? How do you handle them?

Why is it that when people hear that my wife is fighting cancer, that they have to tell me about some relative they had who had cancer of the ? and then died. I appreciate the love and concern, but comments like that are not really uplifting are they?
